A Potential two training design for Code White Teams

The following design was accepted by the ministry of Labour in Ontario as a minimal skill enhancement session designed to protect staff in working with patients who act-out behaviorally. We realize that sending staff to training in terms of back fill costs makes training prohibitive. We believe however that investing in staff and creating team dynamics will result in fewer injuries, less sick time and greater team cohesion in managing client care services. Although we prefer three days as a minimum for training staff, we offer this two day design for individuals who need to respond to acting patients within their care.

Day 1 Design

  • Introduction and Course Overview

  • Arrival and Community Building

  • Review Operating Principles/House Keeping

  • Defining “What we mean about Crisis and the Implications of this definition on our role”

  • Self Awareness:

    • Exploring our Early learning’s about Anger

    • Implications on our work

    • Values and Conflict

    • Differentiating Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviours during an angry moment

    • Understanding the impact of being triggered and exploring prevention techniques for becoming centered

  • Interpersonal Awareness:

    • Identifying the crisis/aggressive behaviours in our work along with precipitating causes

    • Introduction to the Crisis Escalation Spiral

    • Actual Simulation practice in defusing aggressive behavior

    • Non Verbal Behaviours in Crisis including Para verbal influences in crisis

  • Self Protection and Disengaging Skills

    • Principles of defense: never meet force with force

    • Warm up and introduction of the clock

    • Defense against grabs, one arm/two arm/ chokes/shirt pulls and grabs from behind

  • Closure on the day

  • Check in on the day and review agenda for the day

  • High Performing Team Model Exercise

  • Team Intervention Principles

  • Team intervention simulation

  • Team Control Training

  • Warm up: review principles of self protection

  • 2 person response and triangulation

  • 3 person response, 5 person controls

  • Simulation Intervention

  • Transporting and potential review of Pinels

    • Positional Asphyxia and excited delirium

    • Introduction to Critical Incident Stress

  • Compassion fatigue

  • Debriefing protocols and Follow up Code White documentation

    • Centering deep breathing

    • Closure/feedback and outstanding issues

    • Note: if time permits I would add the Team Strength Bombardment Exercise
